PostSubject: designing for excellence "the Mandolin"   Mon Sep 29, 2014 10:11 pm

It's not often that a designer gets to have everything perfect. It's been a work in progress for this designer since the early 80's. Millions of hours of listening has never been so close to paying off. The union of listening Guru Harold Cooper and myself caused the sparks to ignite. The meetings of how do we help high end audio get to the next level has been topic one. At the top of this list for me was the fact that the industry needed a statement. Something that transcends. Something that connects music and the listening of music. With all the designs I do nothing makes this more true than speakers meets room. It's the ultimate high end audio interface, and nothing can or will make this connection take place like the "tunable loudspeaker".

From the very beginning of this process I have had to deal with people who tried, but it wasn't until the Music Ply hit that I felt at home with my efforts. Everything before was "better than the rest" they said, but I knew that my personal best had not yet come. In order for this to happen it would take a team of designers in their own right, each having that perfect touch to what they do. A team that was able to reach into my ears so to speak and give birth to the future of listening. Harold has certainly done this for the business end as well as listening partner. He has allowed me to share my vision, and has made it his own. In doing so he pushed me to stretch, "michael what is the perfect system" followed by "lets make it". It took me a while to realize that Harold really meant "lets make it".

I met Jacob Dorenbaum two years ago and was so impressed at his sensibilities to wood that I felt like I was looking at myself in the mirror. Jacob doesn't woodwork wood, he brings it to life. After Harold heard my recent speaker designs, he said time to take this to the place it deserves. Jacob of course came to my mind immediately. I'm not lying when I tell you that the thought of Harold Cooper and Jacob Dorenbaum sitting in the same room talking about the tunable speaker was more than overwhelming to me. I've thought about the dream team before but sitting in the room with them was like being at a greek God convention. The fact that this meeting was happening 2 miles from the CES site, made this tuning boy drift of into TuneLand heaven.

it's called "Blackened Brazilian Pine"

It's our regular Brazilian Pine with an extreme heat treatment. The Boards are butted together then Jacob applies the baking. At this point the cabinet becomes one, with the rest of the already 5% wood moisture pulled to the surface and burnt, Jacob quickly applies the micro sand and finish. Yes you can feel the grain. We wanted to freeze (bake) the pores intact, leaving the fiber structures as natural as possible to give the most dynamic range to the harmonics.

To answer your question, yes this is an all hardwood speaker. The internal tuning bar is Low Tone Redwood, with a wood metal wood metal transfer.

Cool

Over the next few weeks will be the final voicing, but already they go way past what the industry has offered.
